Takapūneke Reserve

We’re excited to contribute to projects that carry both cultural and historical significance. One such project is the development of the Takapūneke Reserve, located near Akaroa. Overseen by our Christchurch team, this project is being carried out in partnership with Ōnuku Rūnanga and Christchurch City Council.

Crafting the future while respecting the past

Our involvement at Takapūneke is multi-faceted, combining civil engineering expertise with a commitment to honouring the cultural heritage of the land. Our team has already completed several key phases:

• Earthworks for the koru: A key feature of the reserve, we created pathways leading into a central area
• Retaining walls: These were constructed to secure and support the pathways, ensuring both stability and accessibility throughout the area.
• Accessible infrastructure: To make the reserve inclusive for all visitors, we designed and built a pull-in/drop-off area for mobility vehicles at the entrance off Stanley Place.

Current work: crafting unique benches

As the development of Takapūneke Reserve progresses, we’re currently focused on creating two architecturally designed benches, which will serve as a unique feature of the space. These include:

• Rock boulder footings that ground the design in the natural landscape.
• Galvanised steel frames for durability and strength.
• Slatted wood seating shaped like a sail, paying homage to the bay’s history as a key anchorage point.

Our work on the Takapūneke Reserve represents more than just a construction project—it’s a commitment to preserving the culture and history of the land. The local community and visitors can connect with the rich history of Ngāi Tahu while enjoying the natural beauty of the reserve. As we continue our work, we remain focused on delivering a high-quality product that the local community can be proud of for many years to come.
