We’re thrilled to announce that another significant milestone has been achieved! The brand-new KiwiRail Operations Building in Picton is officially up and running. As part of the larger Mechanical Depot project, this building is set to become the central hub for train repairs and maintenance in the upper South Island.
A key achievement in the Mechanical Depot project
The Mechanical Depot project, which kicked off in July 2023, is slated for completion by early 2025. The recent completion of the Operations Building marks the most significant milestone of the project so far. Construction began in November 2023, and the building has been designed with functionality and comfort in mind, featuring bathrooms, offices, meeting rooms, a staff room, a server room, and more. This modern facility is a much-anticipated upgrade for the KiwiRail team, providing a welcoming space for both staff and visitors.
Craig McSkimming from Kiwirail was very pleased to be moving into the purpose-built site adding it is timely for his team to have a better permanent solution in Waitohi Picton. The building even has purpose-built locker rooms, server room, and accessible bathrooms for staff.
A collaborative effort by CMT Group
The successful completion of the Operations Building wouldn’t have been possible without the dedicated efforts of the CMT Group team. Our team was responsible for overseeing every aspect of the project, including:
On August 9th, we handed over the keys, marking the official start of operations in the new facility. Project Manager Scott Guthrie expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, saying, “The construction process went as planned. I’ve been working closely with Nick Faulkner to ensure the construction work and civil work are aligned to keep everything on schedule.”
Looking ahead
