Kāinga Ora builds on the go for CMT Group

March 9, 2023

New Zealanders can rest assured CMT Group are doing our best to bring housing to othose who need it most.

Our civil and building teams are helping with Kāinga Ora projects across the South Island. The developments are coming up quickly due to national efforts to house vulnerable people in our communities. The second development for CMT Group, started in Marlborough at the end of 2022 after the successful opening of the 14-unit subdivision on Brewer Street, Blenheim. The largest government build in Marlborough, in decades.

The two new projects in Canterbury are the first for our Christchurch team. “Once we had completed the first build in Blenheim, Kāinga Ora knew we could deliver on time and to budget. So it was an easy decision for them to issue more and more projects” Says Christchurch Construction Manager Ross Baynes.

For Christchurch Site Manager Scott Burgess, it’s been great to get back into residential builds. “Many of our strengths are in commercial builds and we’ve just finished up the Avon River Corridor bridges and a huge new warehouse for Agvance. Residential builds are more intricate and require precise attention to detail. So that has been nice to get back into.” Says Scott.

The two new subdivisions on Ensign Street and Cobra Street in Christchurch, are conveniently, just around the corner from each other. Both projects consist of four, one bedroom units to be erected on a long subdivision.

Two team members thriving on these projects are apprentices Jay and Jono from our Christchurch team. They’re loving learning all the skills they need to progress their qualification.

In Marlborough our fourth and fifth Kāinga Ora developments are well underway. Case De Wagt who is Site Manager for the Charles Street development of 10 houses, says we aren’t far away from completion. “This is a very central build with lots of neighbours interested in keeping noise and visual pollution down while construction takes place. We’ve mitigated these concerns and can say that everyone will be happy with how the houses were constructed.”

The final Kāinga Ora build in South Street Blenheim is the development of a brand-new area called Patchett Way. This is 15 dwellings, each with two bedrooms, one bathroom, and off-street parking.

The Kāinga Ora projects add great dimension to the CMT Group construction portfolio.
