iReX: Mechanical depot milestones

Uncertainty can’t deter this team. The future of the iReX project may be up in the air, but that won't stop the CMT Group crew from following through and finishing up. Works are progressing well on the new mechanical depot and operations office in Waitohi, Picton.

A mechanical depot, often referred to as a 'motive power depot,' is a key component where trains can be maintained and repaired. Coupled with the operations office, this new infrastructure is poised to provide the vital facilities needed for comprehensive train maintenance.

Commencing in August 2023, the mechanical depot has made significant progress and is well into the construction stage. The main frame stands tall, with supports and walls currently under construction. Simultaneously, the team has undertaken extensive civil work, preparing the groundwork for multiple flooring levels essential to meet specific requirements from Kiwirail.

The operations office, an integral part of the project, is progressing smoothly. The base, frame, and roof have been completed, marking significant milestones in the construction process. The site manager, Scott Guthrie, expressed enthusiasm about the project's progress, stating, "The project has gone very smoothly to this point. We’ve poured a 612m3 of concrete, fitted all the structural engineering and roof installation is underway. Not a bad way to end our work here with iReX."
